Substance Use and Parents

Keeping kids away from drugs may be a parent’s most important and most challenging job.
Given the current epidemic of drug use, our children face growing exposure and temptations. The good news is research confirms that parents have a great influence in this area. When you have honest and informed talks with your kids, and you do it early enough, you can have a real impact.

Young people are influenced by media and entertainment, and increasingly by celebrities and “influencers,” on social media.
Even though you may not believe it, they are influenced even more by you. Exercise your parental influence by talking, setting boundaries, and being consistently engaged with your kids.

Talk. Because they should learn about drugs from you. Thoughtful communication is the key!
